Kumar Sanu reveals he had no idea Udit Narayan would join him on 'Suniyo Zara'
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Legendary playback singer Kumar Sanu has revealed that he was completely unaware he would be sharing the microphone with his longtime friend and professional rival Udit Narayan on their new collaborative track 'Suniyo Zara'. The singer made the disclosure during promotional interactions at his residence in the Andheri West area of Mumbai on 7 November 2026.
How the Collaboration Came Together
Kumar Sanu said he only learned the full details of the project once he arrived at the recording room. 'Actually, I didn't know which actor I was singing for or who was singing with me. I didn't know that. So what happened was that the music producer asked me if I would like to lend my voice to a song, and I said yes. So I went and found out that a song was being composed for this year's film 'Suryaa'. I asked him, 'So, who is singing with me?'. He said, 'Udit sir was singing and another guy was singing',' the veteran singer recalled.
His reaction was one of immediate delight. 'So I was very happy because it's our old friendship. We have done a lot of work together. So now there is a new opportunity. So I was very happy and in the end, the song was good, it was composed well and it was done,' Kumar Sanu added.
Decades of Rivalry — and Brotherhood
The pairing of Kumar Sanu and Udit Narayan carries enormous emotional weight for fans of 1990s Bollywood music. The two singers dominated Hindi film playback for the better part of a decade, frequently competing for the same recordings and the same leading actors' voices. Yet both have consistently maintained that their rivalry never crossed into personal bitterness.
Udit Narayan rose to national prominence with 'Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak', while Kumar Sanu's career-defining breakthrough came with 'Aashiqui'. Kumar Sanu went on to claim five consecutive Filmfare Awards for Best Male Playback Singer between 1991 and 1995, before Udit broke the streak with his win for 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge'. Udit has described their dynamic as that of professional rivals without acrimony, while Kumar Sanu himself characterised it as healthy competition.
Their Earlier Collaborations
Despite competing for individual assignments, the two have occasionally recorded together. Notable earlier collaborations include 'Neend Churai Meri' and 'Dil Ne Yeh Kaha Hai Dil Se', both of which became chartbusters. 'Suniyo Zara' revives that tradition for a new generation of listeners.
Release and Label Details
'Suniyo Zara' has been released under the banner of Zee Music Company. The track is part of the soundtrack for the 2026 film 'Suryaa'. With the nostalgia factor running high, the song is already drawing attention from fans who grew up listening to both voices through the golden era of Hindi film music.
