Is Policing Women's Clothing and Placing Moral Responsibility on Them Outdated and Unacceptable?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Hyderabad, Dec 23 (NationPress) Actor Manchu Manoj expressed his disappointment regarding recent comments about women's attire, stating that such policing or moral responsibility placed on women is outdated and unacceptable.
While he did not specify the comments or the person behind them, many on social media speculated that his remarks were aimed at actor Sivaji, who during a pre-release event for the Telugu film 'Dhandoraa' suggested that actresses should wear more modest clothing.
In response to these remarks, Manchu Manoj shared his thoughts on his X account, saying, "A civilized society should protect women's rights instead of restricting their choices. #RespectWomen #RespectYourself."
He further articulated that comments like these are deeply concerning and that policing women's clothing is no longer acceptable. "Respect and accountability should begin with individual behavior, not by shaming women for their attire. Public figures must be responsible with their words, especially since they can influence societal attitudes," he stated.
Additionally, he pointed out that such remarks infringe upon Articles 14, 15, and 21 of the Indian Constitution, which safeguard the fundamental rights of citizens. "Equality, dignity, and personal liberty are non-negotiable; women's clothing should not be subject to public scrutiny," he added.
Manchu Manoj also issued an apology on behalf of senior actors whose comments he believes have demeaned women and objectified them. "I sincerely apologize for the derogatory remarks made by senior actors that have diminished women to mere objects. These comments do not reflect the views of all men. We cannot normalize this behavior; women deserve respect, dignity, and equality at all times. Inaction is not an option; accountability is crucial," he concluded.
