What Did Mohan Kapur Say About the Work Culture on ‘Miss Marvel’ Sets?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Dec 22 (NationPress) Actor Mohan Kapur, recognized for his role as Yusuf Khan, the loving father of superhero Kamala Khan in Marvel, shared his insights on the notable professional differences he encountered during the filming of ‘Miss Marvel’. He characterized the atmosphere on the international set as uplifting and exceptionally disciplined.
In a conversation with Pooja Bhatt on her podcast, Mohan detailed the contrasts he observed while working on the first installment of Miss Marvel and described the overall work environment.
Recalling his time in the US for the shoot, he noted that the sight of women engaging in significant technical tasks on set was particularly striking. “The most uplifting thing for me was witnessing women take on heavy lifting. I mean, they were literally lifting substantial lights, and I was astonished, thinking, ‘Should I step in to help?’ It was quite surprising to see this level of involvement in the States where everyone contributes to their roles,” he remarked.
Mohan drew comparisons to everyday life during the COVID period, recounting an incident at a supermarket where a staff member denied assistance beyond his assigned duties.
He explained: “While staying in an apartment, I wanted to stock up due to COVID, so I visited a supermarket. I approached a guy who was on a ladder and asked for help, but he replied, ‘Why don’t you check over there? That’s above my pay grade.’ His responsibility was merely stocking items.”
The actor emphasized that a similar structure was evident on the film set. With COVID restrictions limiting crew size, the production operated like a “well-oiled machine”.
“On set, everyone was in sync. Due to COVID, the learning opportunities were reduced, making every individual function like a well-oiled machine. Timeliness and efficiency were crucial,” he noted.
Reflecting on an incident from the first day of filming, he shared that a one-hour delay caused by camera issues was promptly recorded. “The executive producer came with his iPad and requested the director document the reason for the delay. Everything needed to be accounted for,” Mohan said, highlighting that the lack of accountability remains a broader issue in India across various sectors.
“I observe this as a systemic problem in India. There is a significant lack of accountability,” he stated.
‘Ms. Marvel’ is the seventh series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, following Kamala Khan, a 16-year-old Avengers fan who struggles to find her place until she acquires her own powers.
Iman Vellani stars as Kamala Khan, alongside a talented cast including Matt Lintz, Yasmeen Fletcher, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, among others.
Despite being the most seasoned actor on ‘Miss Marvel’, Mohan expressed his continuous quest for feedback from younger colleagues.
“In ‘Miss Marvel’, the only two actors with previous experience were Zenobia Shroff and myself. Despite my seniority, I often sought feedback. Even after receiving praise, I’d ask younger actors if my performance resonated well,” he recalled.
“She told me, ‘You’re Mohan Kapoor; you have extensive experience. Why are you asking?’ I explained that my work has been primarily in India, and our sensibilities differ in terms of dialogue delivery and emotional expression,” he added.
Mohan also underscored the uniqueness of his Marvel journey, having appeared in three franchises including ‘Miss Marvel’, ‘The Marvels’, and ‘Daredevil: Born Again’.
“I am part of three Marvel franchises... I am the only character in the Marvel universe to bridge ‘Miss Marvel’, ‘The Marvels’, and ‘Daredevil’,” he stated.
Describing the experience as surreal, he added: “When asked on the red carpet if my dream had come true, I replied that coming from India, I never imagined I would be here. I lack that audacity, but what I’m doing is my dream, and I don’t wish to wake up.”
