He took to Instagram to post a nostalgic photograph with Zubeen and added: “Missing you so much my brother. Stay happy wherever you are.”
In Assamese, Papon also called for transparency regarding ongoing issues, urging that “the investigation be conducted swiftly, and we will receive answers to our questions soon.”
Tragically, Zubeen Garg passed away on September 19 after a scuba diving accident in Singapore. He was rescued from the water by Singapore police and taken to a nearby hospital, where he was placed in the ICU. Despite the best efforts of medical staff, he could not be saved.
Zubeen was in Singapore for the fourth North East India festival at Suntec, which was set for September 20 and 21. Just hours before this tragic event, he had posted a warm invitation to his fans on social media.
Regarded as a legendary singer in the North East region of India, Zubeen was celebrated as the voice of Assam. His Bollywood success began with the iconic song 'Ya Ali' from the film 'Gangster', released in 2006, which catapulted him to fame across the country.
For those unaware, Zubeen’s younger sister, Jongki Borthakur, also an actress and singer, sadly lost her life in a car accident in February 2002 in Assam's Sonitpur district while en route to a stage performance.
In her honor, Zubeen released the poignant album Xixhu later that year. He was married to Garima Saika Garg, a noted fashion designer and costume director.
Papon himself has performed in various languages such as Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, and Marathi and is the lead vocalist and founder of the folk-fusion band Papon and The East India Company.
