Tamil filmmaker Milo's debut directorial 'Nova – Phase One: The Arrival', led by actress Raiza Wilson, is set to release in September 2025 — and the director is clear about one thing: audiences who walk in expecting a conventional horror film will leave surprised. Milo says the film uses fear as a vehicle to explore a larger, layered mystery spanning time, human memory, and science.

Beyond Ghosts and Haunted Bungalows

Director Milo has deliberately stepped away from the well-worn tropes of Tamil horror — haunted bungalows, revenge-driven spirits, and predictable scare sequences. Instead, he says he has built a distinctive world that weaves together time, human memories, science, and fear into a single narrative fabric.

'This film should not be viewed merely as a horror film. It uses fear as a medium to tell a larger mystery. Our intention is to ensure that audiences walk out of the theatre with a few questions still lingering in their minds,' Milo said.

The screenplay, he adds, is designed to withhold answers rather than deliver them — a structural choice intended to sustain audience curiosity from the opening scene to the final frame.

A Shoot Built Around Darkness

One of the most striking creative decisions on Nova was a visual one: no sunlight was to appear in any scene. The production team reportedly waited for dark clouds to gather before rolling the camera on several sequences — a logistical challenge that extended the difficulty of an already demanding shoot.

The entire film was shot across 32 days in a mountainous village in Kerala, a location Milo says the story itself demanded, regardless of the hardship it imposed on the crew.

'Getting to that location was extremely difficult. The terrain was so challenging that there were days when someone would get hurt. But that was the location the story demanded. So, from the actors to the technical crew, everyone worked extremely hard,' the director said.

Produced by Royal Fortuna Creations, the film features Raiza Wilson in the lead role, supported by Dhruva, Adhivathi Shetty, Senrayan, Hrithika Biswas, and 'Finally' Swathika in pivotal parts. The project has been positioned as a horror science-fiction supernatural fantasy thriller — a genre blend that is relatively rare in Tamil cinema.
