Mumbai, June 1 (NationPress) Director-actor Ramesh Sippy recounted a fascinating story about a visit from several producers hailing from south India.
A newly surfaced video, broadcasted by the Indian state broadcaster, Prasar Bharati, captures him explaining the purpose of the producers' visit. He revealed that his production had previously adapted a Tamil film into Hindi without formal authorization for the rights, inspired by the film.
The film in question is ‘Ram Aur Shyam’, which he reinterpreted as ‘Seeta Aur Geeta’. Contrary to his assumptions, the producers were there to discuss rights, but not for ‘Ram Aur Shyam’; rather, it was about the Tamil version of ‘Seeta Aur Geeta’.
He recounted, “We were visited by producers from the south. They were the original creators of ‘Ram Aur Shyam’. We felt a bit anxious, thinking, ‘Have they come regarding some copyright issue?’ My father was present. I was there too. We offered them chai and coffee and inquired, ‘What can we do for you?’ They responded, ‘You have made this film ‘Seeta Aur Geeta’. Can we obtain the rights to create this film in Tamil? Additionally, we want to feature Hema Malini in the lead role.’”
“I was in disbelief. Then they asked, ‘Mr. Sippy, what would be the cost? What do you expect in return?’ I replied, ‘Please take it and proceed with the project. There’s no charge. I was motivated by your film to create ‘Seeta Aur Geeta’. You are entirely welcome to move forward with your adaptation.’ We provided them with a letter to authorize the film's production,” he elaborated.
