What Charges Have Been Filed Against the Accused in the Rohit Shetty Firing Case?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Feb 11 (NationPress) In the ongoing investigation of the Rohit Shetty firing incident, authorities have charged the five suspects under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act, 1999 (MCOCA). The suspects were brought before a special court where the police custody period concluded recently, leading to the application of MCOCA against all of them.
The special court has ordered that the five suspects remain in police custody until February 17, 2026. Although the Mumbai Crime Branch had requested a custody extension of 15 days, the court decided otherwise. MCOCA, a legislative framework established in 1999, aims to address issues of organized crime and terrorism within the state of Maharashtra.
According to the Mumbai Crime Branch, one of the key figures, Subham Lonkar, intended to instill fear in Mumbai and informed the arrested individuals about executing a significant act. Evidence suggests that Subham communicated with the arrested suspects via a messaging app and transferred ₹40,000 to one of them. It was revealed that Subham had supplied three firearms to his brother, Praveen Lonkar, which were subsequently handed over to those involved in the firing incident against Rohit Shetty.
For context, a total of five gunshots were fired at the residence of filmmaker Rohit Shetty located in Juhu. Investigations indicate that the vehicle used during this attack originated from Pune.
This vehicle was purchased by Aditya Gayki, one of the accused, for ₹30,000 shortly before the incident. Following this, Aditya and another suspect, Samarth Pomaji, abandoned the vehicle at a predetermined location in Juhu. The Crime Branch noted that the individuals who acquired the vehicle were unaware of the identity of the shooter. Ultimately, it was Shubham Lonkar who instructed the shooter to retrieve the vehicle and carry out the attack.
