Mumbai, May 8 (NationPress) Filmmaker Sajid Khan disclosed that a comical diaper scene in the 2007 movie Heyy Babyy was initially intended for actor Fardeen Khan. However, it ultimately transitioned to superstar Akshay Kumar, who managed to enhance its humor during the dubbing phase.
Sajid, a guest on Bharti Singh and Harssh Limbachiyaa’s podcast, reminisced about his directorial debut and the memorable scene involving a diaper being tossed onto Akshay’s face post-baby change.
He reminisced: “The diaper scene in ‘Heyy Babyy’ was always meant for Fardeen Khan. It was part of the original script. Fardeen is renowned for his charisma, and the juxtaposition was intended to be humorous—it would be evident on his face.”
“Things were going smoothly until the morning of the shoot. As we discussed the scene and contemplated using paint for effect, Fardeen suddenly exclaimed, ‘Sajid, I can’t do this.’ When I inquired why, he replied, ‘It’s a baby’s poop, man. I can’t handle that.’”
“Akshay Kumar, sitting beside him, immediately chimed in, ‘Put it on me! I’m game!’ I said, ‘It’s settled!’” the filmmaker added.
While recalling the filming, Sajid mentioned: “In the scene, Fardeen tries to avoid the mess, sees it on Akshay, and reacts in disgust—‘Eww.’ Akshay responds with ‘Shit!’ During the dubbing, when the diaper covered Akshay’s face, he ad-libbed a line that had Riteish and me laughing for five days straight. He said, ‘Ooh! matar wale chawal!’”
Sajid praised Akshay, affirming that he possesses exceptional comic timing.
“Akshay is one of the most amusing individuals I’ve had the pleasure to work with. His comedic timing is simply remarkable,” Sajid stated.
Heyy Babyy features Akshay Kumar, Fardeen Khan, Riteish Deshmukh, Vidya Balan, Juanna Sanghvi, and Boman Irani. The film's storyline is loosely inspired by the Malayalam movie Thoovalsparsham, which is adapted from the American film Three Men and a Baby, itself based on the French film Three Men and a Cradle.
Sajid also shared that he never assisted anyone prior to his debut with Heyy Babyy.
“When I entered filmmaking in 2007, I had never been an assistant to anyone. Not once. Before Heyy Babyy in 2007, I created a short film for Darna Zaroori Hai, featuring Manoj Pahwa in a graveyard scene,” Sajid explained.
He continued: “I aimed to craft something in the style of Hollywood, so I recruited two assistants from Ram Gopal Varma’s office. I was given four days to finish it and managed to complete it in three and a half. The entire film cost around 6–7 lakhs, with Manoj taking 1 lakh. Essentially, I did it for free. That was my first break as a writer-director.”
