Thiruvananthapuram, July 29 (NationPress) With merely two days remaining for the withdrawal of nominations for the 17-member executive committee of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), the possibility is high that renowned actress Shwetha Menon could make history as the first female president in this male-centric organization's three-decade existence.
The way seems to be opening after actor and comedian Jagadish, aged 70, indicated his intention to retract his nomination for the presidency.
A total of 74 nominations have been submitted for various positions, and clarity on whether Shwetha will indeed make history or if voting will be necessary for the top post and others will only emerge on Thursday—the final date for withdrawal of nominations.
AMMA’s office bearers comprise the president, two vice-presidents, the general secretary, the joint secretary, the treasurer, and 11 executive members.
Approximately 500 AMMA members are eligible to cast their votes.
In a conversation with IANS, Jagadish mentioned he consulted legendary actors Mammootty, Mohanlal, and Union Minister of State Suresh Gopi before submitting his nomination.
“In 2021, there was a prevailing sentiment that two women should assume the vice-presidency. Upon hearing this, I withdrew my nomination then. Now, discussions are emerging about a woman leading our organization. I felt it was inappropriate for me to stand in the way,” stated Jagadish.
“I revisited this discussion with the three senior actors, and they echoed the same sentiment. Therefore, I have chosen to step aside,” he shared with IANS.
Nonetheless, he pointed out that several factors still need alignment. “There are four other candidates for the presidency, including Shwetha. If the others do not withdraw, we will proceed to an election. Let’s see if she is elected unopposed,” added Jagadish.
