'Swayambhu' director reveals crew stranded on Maredumilli hill during forest shoot
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Director Bharat Krishnamachari of the forthcoming film 'Swayambhu' has disclosed a harrowing incident during the production's forest schedule in Maredumilli, near Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh, where unexpected weather forced part of the crew to remain stranded on a mountain without essentials for nearly a day or two.
Location scouting in untouched terrain
The live-action sequences were filmed in the forests of Maredumilli, the same region where Allu Arjun-starrer 'Pushpa' shot its forest scenes. However, Krishnamachari emphasised that the production deliberately sought virgin locations where no prior filming had occurred. Accessing these sites required 2 to 2.5 hours of jeep travel to reach the mountain peaks, turning logistics itself into an expedition.
The stranding incident
During one mountain schedule, sudden rainfall struck the location, leaving a portion of the crew marooned without basic supplies. The director noted that 'Swayambhu' was among the first productions authorised to shoot in that pristine area, underscoring both the remoteness and the administrative hurdles overcome.
Massive set construction across three worlds
Beyond location shooting, Krishnamachari detailed the film's expansive production design spanning three distinct, cohesive worlds. At Janwada, Hyderabad, the team leased 6 to 8 acres and constructed a full-fledged village set from scratch over 40 to 45 days, prioritising authenticity and intricate detailing.
Climax sequences and bridge engineering
The most ambitious segment involved the climax, shot over 70 to 80 days at Annapurna Studios. The production erected elaborate indoor sets at unprecedented scale, including two massive bridges—one engineered specifically for destruction. The destruction bridge measured approximately 11 to 12 feet wide and nearly 100 feet long, constructed using bluemat techniques. Alongside this, a detailed mountain set with an intricate pathway was built on one of the studio's largest soundstages, enabling the climax to be staged with the intended scale and intensity.
Release timeline
Produced by Bhuvan and Shreekar of Pixel Studios, 'Swayambhu' is slated for a worldwide release in Summer 2026.
