Actor Vardhan Puri on 22 June 2026 paid a deeply personal tribute to his late grandfather, legendary Bollywood actor Amrish Puri, on what would have been the icon's 94th birth anniversary. Sharing a carousel of nostalgic photographs on social media, Vardhan described how the family marked the occasion with Amrish Puri's favourite comfort food and beloved songs — a private ritual that offered a rare glimpse into the man behind the myth.

A Family Tribute Rooted in Ritual

Vardhan shared four photographs — one showing a young Vardhan in traditional attire and floral garlands alongside his grandfather, another featuring a young Amrish Puri holding a trophy in a studio portrait, a family photograph with his wife and children, and a vintage-era image of the actor. The pictures collectively traced the arc of a life lived both in the spotlight and at home.

Alongside the images, Vardhan wrote an emotional note addressed to his 'Dadu'. He said, 'Happy birthday to the greatest Dadu in the whole universe! The world and your countless admirers around the world love you for your craft and the countless characters you made immortal on stage and in cinema. But, if they got to witness even 1% of the gentleness you treated us, your family with at home, they would fall even deeper in love with you, if that's even a possibility.'

Dal-Roti, Halwa Cake, and Kishore Kumar

Vardhan revealed that the family gathered for a lunch featuring Amrish Puri's comfort favourites — dal roti and poori channa — while singing songs by KL Saigal and Kishore Kumar, both of whom the late actor reportedly cherished. He also mentioned cutting a large halwa cake in his grandfather's memory. 'We are having your comfort dal roti, poori channa etc at our dining table and singing your favourite KL Saigal sahab and Kishore Kumar sahab songs as we remember you today at lunch,' he wrote.

He added a note of longing: 'We wish you and our beloved Dadi were with us physically as well even though you are with us in spirit — something we feel in our bones every single day. Missing your bear hugs while you wrestled with us grandkids in bed. Missing your whistles and naughty smiles.'

The Legacy of a Cinema Legend

Amrish Puri was born on 22 June 1932 and spent years in theatre before making his film debut in his late thirties. He rose to become one of the most formidable screen villains of the 1980s and 1990s in Hindi cinema. His portrayal of 'Mogambo' in the 1987 cult classic 'Mr. India' — and the line 'Mogambo khush hua!' — remains one of the most quoted in Indian film history.

He also delivered one of Bollywood's most beloved lines in 'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge' — 'Jaa Simran Jaa, jee le apni zindagi' — demonstrating a range that extended well beyond villainy. His filmography included 'Virasat', 'Gardish', 'Pardes', 'Karan Arjun', 'Ghayal', 'Damini', 'Meri Jung', and 'Chachi 420'. Off-screen, his trademark hat became as iconic as his voice; reportedly, it was placed on his funeral pyre as a final farewell by his family.

Amrish Puri passed away on 12 January 2005. His grandson Vardhan Puri made his own Bollywood debut with 'Yeh Saali Aashiqui' in 2019 and has since appeared in 'Bloody Ishq'.
