New Delhi, March 24 (NationPress) Raghav Chadha, a member of the Rajya Sabha from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), expressed his worries in Parliament on Tuesday about what he termed as “deceptive branding and dishonest advertising” in India’s consumer marketplace, with a particular focus on packaged fruit beverages.
During his address in the upper chamber of Parliament, Chadha highlighted that a significant number of consumers, particularly the youth, are being led to believe they are consuming wholesome and nutritious drinks, while in fact, many of these items are essentially “sugar syrups” disguised as fruit juices.
He cautioned that these misleading practices are escalating the incidence of lifestyle-related health issues, including diabetes and obesity, among the population.
“I would like to ask the esteemed minister, through you, what measures the government is implementing to prohibit misleading imagery, ensuring that companies do not mislead visually while adhering to technical regulations,” Chadha stated.
He also sought clarification on whether the government intends to enforce significant front-of-pack labeling for products high in sugar and to guarantee a clear classification of beverages, differentiating between genuine fruit juices and drinks composed of sugar, concentrates, and preservatives.
Pointing out the matter of packaging practices, the AAP leader noted that numerous products exhibit appealing images of fresh fruits on the front, while disclaimers such as “images are for marketing purposes only” are often written in small text on the back of the packaging.
“Do you think you’re sipping on fruit juice? Think again,” Chadha commented, claiming that major food brands are misleading consumers through visual marketing strategies while concealing vital information.
He stressed that such practices are steering millions, especially children, towards unhealthy consumption habits and called for more stringent regulations and transparency in food labeling.
Chadha urged the government to act decisively to safeguard consumers and ensure that branding and advertising practices are honest, clear, and non-deceptive.
