Mumbai, May 21 (NationPress) Maharashtra has recorded two deaths linked to Covid-19 since the beginning of this year, according to the state health department. Both individuals had pre-existing health conditions.
In a statement released late Tuesday, the department confirmed that the fatalities occurred in Mumbai, involving patients with comorbidities (the coexistence of multiple health issues). One patient suffered from nephrotic syndrome accompanied by hypocalcemia seizures, while the other was undergoing treatment for cancer.
The health department noted that a total of 6,066 swab samples have been tested for the coronavirus since January, with 106 returning positive results for the virus. Of these, 101 cases were recorded in Mumbai, with the remaining cases from Pune, Thane, and Kolhapur. Currently, 52 patients are receiving treatment for mild symptoms, and 16 individuals are hospitalized.
"An increase in Covid-19 infections is being observed not only in Maharashtra but also across other states and countries," the health department's release stated.
“Covid is caused by a virus. Presently, an ILI (Influenza-like Illness) and SARI (Severe Acute Respiratory Infection) survey is underway in Maharashtra to identify Covid cases. Those who test positive are being managed appropriately, though Covid cases are now rare in the state. Patients are usually exhibiting mild symptoms. The health department has facilities for testing and treatment, and thus, the public is advised to remain calm,” the release emphasized.
Previously, the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced on Monday that “Covid-19 is now regarded as an endemic and a persistent health issue. The virus has become entrenched within the community, leading to sporadic and infrequent cases.”
Recently, an uptick in Covid cases has been noted in Singapore, Hong Kong, East Asia, and other regions. The BMC's health department is diligently monitoring the situation to manage the spread of the virus. "From January to April, the number of patients was minimal. Cases have been reported since May, but the BMC is urging residents to stay calm regarding this situation,” the release stated.
The BMC has confirmed the availability of treatment and guidance facilities at civic hospitals, including Seven Hills Hospital, which offers 20 beds in the MICU, 20 pediatric and maternal beds, and 60 general beds. Additionally, Kasturba Hospital is equipped with 2 ICU beds and a specialized ward with 10 beds, with the capacity to rapidly expand.
The common symptoms of Covid-19 include fever, cough (either dry or with phlegm), sore or achy throat, fatigue, body aches, and headaches. Some may also experience a runny nose and a loss of taste or smell. These symptoms can often mimic those of the common cold and vary among individuals. In severe cases, difficulty breathing is a significant warning sign,” noted the BMC advisory.
The BMC emphasized that Covid-19 can be prevented by adhering to proper precautions. Individuals with serious health conditions and weakened immune systems, such as cancer patients, the elderly, and those with diabetes or hypertension, should take extra care. The BMC encourages the public to consult a municipal clinic, hospital, or family physician if they experience symptoms like fever, cough (dry or with phlegm), sore throat, fatigue, body aches, and headaches.
The Corporation has also urged the public to wear a mask in public settings if they exhibit symptoms, maintain social distancing, wash hands frequently with soap and water, and follow a balanced diet while ensuring adequate rest.
