Kolkata, March 23 (NationPress) New claims of mismanagement have emerged from the Trauma Care Unit at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. On Monday, the family of a patient alleged that he lost his life due to the hospital's negligence while seeking medical care.

They stated that the patient was not provided with a stretcher to assist him to the restroom. The middle-aged individual, named Biswajit Samanta, collapsed while trying to walk there and tragically passed away shortly thereafter last night.

According to family members, Biswajit visited RG Kar Hospital suffering from respiratory distress, accompanied by nosebleeds. Initial treatment managed to control the bleeding during the night, and he seemed to show signs of improvement. However, he succumbed while attempting to reach the restroom. The family contends that there was no restroom available in the immediate vicinity of the treatment area.

When they sought help from hospital staff, they were reportedly told to take him either outside or to the second floor. Moreover, a stretcher was not made available for transporting him to that floor. His relatives insisted that the man died while trying to walk—despite his frail condition—to reach the restroom situated on the second floor.

As of now, hospital officials have not released any statement concerning this incident.

Ila Samanta, the widow of the deceased, shared her harrowing experience with reporters. "We brought him here last night. He was experiencing nosebleeds. After receiving some treatment, he appeared to stabilize somewhat. Then, he expressed the need to use the restroom. No one provided a stretcher. A sick patient was made to walk to the restroom, leading to this heartbreaking outcome. How could they expect a sick person to walk?"

The deceased's son, Vishal Samanta, remarked, "There are no restrooms in the vicinity. The doctor told us to take him outside for the facilities. Yet, nobody offered us a stretcher. We had to carry him to the second floor just to find a restroom. He struggled to walk there. Suddenly, he collapsed. The doctor checked him and simply stated, 'He is no more!' Had there been a restroom nearby, or had a stretcher been provided, perhaps this tragedy could have been avoided."

He further expressed, "We come to this hospital—specifically RG Kar—with so much hope. But it seems even healthy individuals become ill and die here!"

The deceased's body has been sent for a post-mortem examination. Meanwhile, a case of unnatural death has been registered by the Tala Police Station in connection with this incident.

RG Kar Hospital in North Kolkata has been under scrutiny for some time now.

Just last Friday, Arup Banerjee, a resident of Dum Dum, lost his life after being trapped in an elevator within the trauma care building of the hospital. This incident also highlighted the absence of nearby restroom facilities.

Banerjee had arrived at RG Kar to seek medical attention for his three-year-old son. The child needed to use the restroom; however, with no accessible facilities nearby, they were forced to take the elevator.

It is alleged that a mechanical malfunction caused the elevator to spiral out of control. Arup and his family were stuck in the basement for an extended period. Tragically, Banerjee was crushed when he became trapped in the elevator doors. The hospital's mismanagement and a severe lack of maintenance have been cited as factors leading to this fatal incident. Only two days later, new allegations of death resulting from administrative negligence have arisen at the same hospital.

In August 2024, a woman doctor on night duty was raped and murdered within RG Kar Hospital, raising serious concerns regarding the hospital’s security protocols.
