New Delhi, Jan 29 (NationPress) Over 85.97 million individuals have benefited from complimentary treatments totaling Rs 1.2 lakh crore under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), as per the most recent data released by the government on Wednesday.
Initiated in 2018, PM-JAY offers financial security to underprivileged rural families and identifies occupational categories within urban worker families. This scheme is recognized as the largest health assurance initiative globally, providing extensive secondary and tertiary care hospitalization benefits of up to Rs 5 lakh per family each year.
According to the PM-JAY dashboard, as of January 29, Tamil Nadu leads the list with 90,49,496 beneficiaries. Following Tamil Nadu are Karnataka (66,04,849), Rajasthan (57,41,363), Kerala (54,64,674), Andhra Pradesh (49,67,217), and Gujarat (45,46,832). Lakshadweep has the fewest beneficiaries, totaling only 780.
Significantly, PM-JAY imposes no restrictions on family size or age and covers pre-existing conditions from the outset, allowing patients to access treatment immediately upon registration.
The services encompass a variety of procedures that cover all treatment-related expenses, including medications, supplies, diagnostic services, physician fees, accommodation charges, surgical fees, operating theatre and ICU expenses, among others.
Additionally, the scheme offers a comprehensive array of services that include medical assessments, treatments, consultations; pre-hospitalization costs, medications, and medical supplies; both non-intensive and intensive care services; diagnostic and laboratory testing; medical implantation assistance; lodging and meal services; treatment for complications; and post-hospitalization follow-up care lasting up to 15 days.
Moreover, the dashboard indicates that over 365.4 million Ayushman Cards have been distributed to beneficiaries to date. A total of 31,077 public and private hospitals are registered under PM-JAY. Uttar Pradesh has issued the highest number of Ayushman Cards, totaling 5,19,78,317, while Lakshadweep has the least, with 35,343.
On October 29, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Ayushman Vay Vandana scheme—an extension of the flagship Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY). This new initiative aims to offer senior citizens complimentary healthcare benefits, supplementing the existing AB PM-JAY family scheme. Under this program, elderly individuals will receive a distinct coverage of Rs 5 lakh annually.
