Agartala, Dec 18 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of Tripura, Manik Saha, on Thursday characterized the inauguration of the state’s premier government dental college as a significant achievement that has addressed the long-standing desires of the residents.
During the third anniversary celebration of the Agartala Government Dental College held at the Muktadhara Auditorium, the Chief Minister pointed out that this institution has swiftly become a pivotal hub for education, medical training, and healthcare services since its establishment.
On this occasion, Saha also launched the renovation and restoration of the old Indira Gandhi Memorial (IGM) Hospital, which is designed to be earthquake-resistant, and participated in the ground-breaking ceremony for the new building of the Agartala Government Dental College and IGM Hospital.
Stressing the government's dedication to enhancing healthcare infrastructure, the Chief Minister noted that no previous administration had established a dental college within such a short timeframe.
He reiterated that the BJP-led government is committed to ensuring equitable medical services and that quality healthcare is accessible to every segment of society.
“The journey of this government dental college commenced in 2023. With the proactive measures of the state government and the earnest support of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the college is progressing steadily towards success,” stated Saha, who is also a dental surgeon.
He remarked that students from Tripura can now pursue advanced dental education locally, while residents benefit from enhanced medical services.
Reflecting on the current government's tenure beginning in 2018, the Chief Minister shared that the establishment of the dental college was in response to public needs, the futures of students, and the comprehensive development of the healthcare system.
“From the academic year 2023-24, the college has launched its BDS course with 50 seats, which has now increased to 63. Today, this institution is garnering appreciation nationwide,” he noted.
Saha also mentioned that the state government is persistently working on infrastructural growth and reforms throughout Tripura.
“While the historical IGM hospital will be renovated, its heritage will be preserved,” he assured.
The renovation of the original hospital building will align with preservation efforts for the Ujjayanta Palace and Pushpabanta Palace, built by former kings in 1900 and 1917, respectively.
The hospital, initially known as Victoria Memorial, was founded by Maharaja Bir Chandra Manikya Bahadur in 1873 with just 30 beds.
In the early 20th century, the British government initiated the construction of grand memorials honoring Queen Victoria in various locations across the country, funded by princely donations.
Emphasizing the significance of the foundation day, the Chief Minister stated that it is a source of pride for students, educators, and staff, reminding them of their duty to uphold the institution's dignity and reputation.
He encouraged doctors to serve with a commitment to service and reiterated that healthcare must be accessible to individuals from all walks of life.
Among those present at the event were Kiran Gitte, Secretary of the Health Department, Shalu Rai, Principal of the Dental College, Debashree Debbarma, Director of Health Services, H.P. Sharma, Director of Medical Education, Anjan Das, Director of Family Welfare and Disease Prevention, and Saju Wahid A., Director of the State Health Mission.
