Nairobi, Feb 7 (NationPress) A coalition of United Nations agencies announced on Thursday, US time, the selection of 15 innovation hubs aimed at accelerating the development of the digital economy in Kenya while enhancing equity and inclusivity.

The identification of these digital innovation hubs is part of the Digital Platforms Kenya, a three-year initiative led by the UN, which aims to establish the country as a center for knowledge-based industries, as per a collaborative statement released in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, by the UN agencies and the Kenyan authorities.

John Tanui, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Communication and Digital Economy, remarked that these digital innovation hubs would serve as platforms to promote innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable development.

"The importance of Kenya's digital innovation hubs cannot be overstated for its economic future. Supporting these hubs empowers youth and women with essential digital skills, driving innovation and inclusive growth," Tanui stated.

The selection of these 15 hubs followed a public call for applications in December 2024, which drew more than 50 entries. The assessment criteria focused on their ability to foster digital innovation, encourage entrepreneurship, and uplift women and youth from Kenya's underserved areas.

The UN agencies highlighted that the chosen digital innovation hubs would act as engines for innovation, training, and community empowerment, effectively addressing the country's digital gap. Scattered throughout various Kenyan counties, these hubs will offer customized training and mentorship centered on critical digital skills, analytical thinking, and ethical AI practices.

Moreover, these hubs will assist emerging entrepreneurs in building and expanding digital enterprises to stimulate economic growth, create job opportunities, and promote social cohesion, as reported by the UN agencies through Xinhua news agency.

These hubs are projected to generate 4,500 direct jobs and 20,000 indirect jobs in the Kenyan economy by 2027. Additionally, over 20,000 government officials and citizens are expected to acquire the necessary skills to engage in the nation's digital transformation.

Stephen Jackson, UN Resident Coordinator in Kenya, asserted that these digital innovation hubs would play a crucial role in achieving sustainable development goals in the country, particularly benefiting historically marginalized populations including women, youth, and nomadic communities.
