Dhaka, April 23 (NationPress) The Bangladesh High Court has approved bail for 61 lawyers identified as supporters of the Awami League party, according to reports from local media on Wednesday.
The arrests occurred in connection with a case concerning an assault and an attempted murder of fellow lawyers during the student uprising last year.
Additional Attorney General Abdul Jabbar Bhuiyan confirmed to the prominent Bangladeshi publication, The Daily Star, on Wednesday that after reviewing 15 individual bail petitions filed by the accused lawyers, the judicial panel comprising Justice Abu Taher Mohammad Saifur Rahman and Justice Kazi Ebadot Hossain granted the bail on Tuesday.
Earlier this month, various local media reported that a court in Dhaka denied bail to 83 'pro-Awami League' lawyers and incarcerated them due to allegations of violence during the July uprising.
From those 83, the High Court granted bail to 61 lawyers who claimed association with the Awami League, citing the absence of specific allegations against them.
Recently, the Awami League, led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, expressed strong disapproval of the Dhaka court ruling that denied bail and resulted in the incarceration of over 80 lawyers.
The party asserted that these lawyers, who have defended the rights of the oppressed and marginalized individuals in Bangladesh, are being targeted for potentially revealing the fraudulent nature of the interim government under Muhammad Yunus.
A statement released by the party further claimed, "The fascist Yunus government has not only placed its loyal supporters as judges but has also maintained its overt interference within the judiciary. By exerting force, it has unlawfully dismissed high court judges."
"When individuals suffer injustice or have their rights stripped away, they seek remedy through the courts. However, the Yunus regime continues to exploit the judiciary, issuing a series of unlawful orders that set a dreadful precedent in our history," the statement articulated.
Condemning the interim government, the Awami League stated that the government has utilized the courts to "persecute lawyers (including senior and female legal professionals) with fabricated charges."
The Awami League also indicated that the interim government is stalling bail for all accused, even those who are entitled to it, keeping them imprisoned under unfounded and baseless allegations.
"We demand the immediate dismissal of all politically motivated, false, and harassing cases against these lawyers and others. We also call for the unconditional release of all political prisoners," read the party's statement.
"The direct and indirect backing of this government has generated chaos nationwide, turning the entire nation into a prison. The people of Bangladesh, who yearn for democracy, seek liberation from the grip of this fascist Yunus government."
"The Bangladesh Awami League will persist in its quest for the freedom and rights of the people," it concluded.
