Dhaka, Jan 3 (NationPress) In a troubling surge of violence against minorities in Bangladesh, another Hindu individual has tragically passed away following a ruthless attack by a group of assailants in Damudya upazila, Shariatpur district, as reported by local media.

The deceased, Khokon Chandra Das, a merchant from Damudya, was viciously attacked and severely wounded before the attackers doused him with petrol and ignited him earlier this week.

This horrific incident took place near Keurbhanga Bazar in Kaneshwar Union of Damudya late on Wednesday night.

He ultimately succumbed to his injuries while receiving care at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka on Saturday morning.

According to the report from Bangladesh's Bengali newspaper Kalbela, Damudya Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Rabiul Haque stated, "We have been informed about Khokon Chandra Das, a businessman from Keurbhanga Bazar, who has passed away during treatment in Dhaka. We are coordinating with Shahbagh Police Station in Dhaka. His body will be returned to the family after the autopsy, and the police are actively pursuing the suspects involved in this incident."

Sources from Damudya police station, as reported by the prominent Bengali daily Prothom Alo, indicated that Khokon operated a medicine and mobile banking enterprise in Keurbhanga Bazar.

While returning home in a CNG-powered auto rickshaw after closing his shop on Wednesday night with his earnings, he was intercepted by miscreants on the Damudya-Shariatpur road, who assaulted him and subsequently set him on fire.

His nephew, Prant Das, mentioned that Khokon had been under treatment at the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute in Dhaka since late Thursday night. His health deteriorated dramatically in the early hours of Saturday, leading to his death while in the Intensive Care Unit.

In a statement to Prothom Alo, Bidhan Sarkar, the head of the burn unit at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, confirmed that Khokon initially received treatment at the hospital for burns covering approximately 30 percent of his body before being transferred to the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute, where he ultimately passed away.

Khokon's death is the second act of brutality against a Hindu man within just a week.

Earlier this week, a 40-year-old man named Bajendra Biswas was fatally shot by a colleague in Bhaluka upazila of Mymensingh district.

On December 24 of the previous year, reports surfaced regarding the murder of another Hindu youth, Amrit Mondal, a 29-year-old who was reportedly lynched by a mob in the Hossaindanga area of Kalimohar Union.

Furthermore, on December 18, a 25-year-old Hindu youth, Dipu Chandra Das, was brutally murdered in a mob lynching incident triggered by false blasphemy allegations from a Muslim coworker at his factory in Bhaluka Upazila of Mymensingh. The mob killed Das and subsequently hung his body from a tree before setting it ablaze.

Bangladesh has seen a worrying uptick in violence against minorities, including Hindus, under the current interim government led by Yunus, igniting outrage among citizens and various human rights organizations around the world.
