Dhaka, Sep 7 (NationPress) Bangladesh's Home Affairs Advisor Lt Gen Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (retd) acknowledged on Sunday that there has been a decline in the country's law and order situation, according to local media sources.
"The situation was satisfactory; however, given the recent events, I would say it has slightly worsened. We are committed to doing everything possible to restore it to its previous state," Lt Gen Chowdhury stated to reporters after launching a training initiative aimed at enhancing police capabilities for election duties at Rajarbagh Police Lines in Dhaka, as reported by the United News of Bangladesh.
He mentioned that an inquiry is underway concerning the recent disturbances that erupted in Rajbari, revealing that five individuals linked to the incident have been apprehended.
When questioned about the violence in Rajbari, he remarked: "We will provide details once the investigation report is finalized. Nevertheless, we have already detained five individuals involved in the incident. Following their questioning, we should gain a clearer understanding."
Regarding the fairness of the investigation with the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police remaining in their positions, he replied: "Negligence will be assessed through the investigation process. If I dismiss everyone prematurely, it implies I don't value the investigation. Action will be taken if anyone is found guilty; if innocent, they will not face repercussions. How can I determine responsibility without an investigation?"
On September 5, violence resulted in one death and over 100 injuries in Rajbari's Goalanda upazila due to clashes ignited by tensions surrounding the grave of Nurul Haque Molla, a self-proclaimed Imam Mahdi claimant. The deceased was identified as Md Rasel Molla, 28, according to reports from The Business Standard.
The unrest began around noon on Friday when angry locals attacked the resting place of Nural Pagla, leading to violent confrontations between his supporters and local residents, resulting in numerous injuries.
After Nural Pagla's passing on August 23, his family interred him outside their home in a 12-foot structure designed to resemble Kaaba Sharif. This grave, accompanied by a signboard reading "Darbar Sharif of Hazrat Imam Mahdi (AS)," incited anger among local Muslims, escalating tensions in the area.
The Imam Parishad of Goalanda Upazila called for protests on August 26. The district administration held multiple meetings to defuse the situation, during which the public demanded modifications to the grave's structure, the removal of the signboard, and a reduction in the grave's height. The family consented to the first two demands but requested time until September 4 to address the height issue. However, they did not comply within the set timeframe, as reported by The Business Standard.
On September 5, following Friday prayers, locals congregated at the Goalanda Ansar Club square, leading to clashes with Nural Pagla's followers. The mob vandalized and looted adjacent homes, set the "shrine" ablaze, and exhumed the body, which was subsequently paraded to the Dhaka-Khulna highway at the Padma intersection and burned. The army, police, magistrates, and RAB intervened to restore order while fire service teams were deployed to manage the flames.
