Dhaka, Dec 16 (NationPress) The Bangladesh Nationalist Party has raised alarms regarding the resurgence of groups that opposed the nation’s independence in 1971, according to local reports.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made these statements during the observance of Victory Day, celebrated annually on December 16. This day commemorates the moment in 1971 when Bangladesh achieved independence after the surrender of Pakistani forces to the Indian Armed Forces, concluding a grueling nine-month conflict.
This warning comes amid the notable rise of the radical Islamist party Jamaat-e-Islami, which famously opposed the Liberation War of 1971, particularly following the transition to an interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.
“Today, the adversaries of independence, those who resisted our freedom in 1971, are attempting to rise again. The patriotic citizens of Bangladesh, who cherish independence and democracy, will thwart all their plots and preserve the nation's sovereignty. Democracy will prevail,” The Daily Star reported Fakhrul as stating.
“The war initiated with the declaration of independence reached its final triumph in December (1971). Thus, this day holds profound significance for us,” he added.
Earlier this month, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman accused Jamaat of disseminating falsehoods against his party.
