With the shooter still at large, the university authorities have declared a lockdown, advising all members of the university community to stay alert and remain indoors.

At least two individuals have lost their lives and nine others have sustained injuries on Saturday afternoon (local time) at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, according to campus officials.

The two deceased and eight of the injured are students enrolled at Brown University, as confirmed by President Christina Paxson during a press briefing on Saturday evening, according to reports from Xinhua news agency.

Six of the injured individuals are reported to be in critical but stable condition, one is in critical condition, and another is stable, as per local media citing hospital sources.

Law enforcement indicated that the incident took place near an academic and research hub on campus, where students were in the midst of final examinations. Officers have been dispatched to the scene, and the investigation is ongoing.

The shooting occurred at the Barus and Holley building, which accommodates classrooms and laboratories for the university's engineering and physics programs, as stated by Providence Mayor Brett Smiley.

President Donald Trump remarked on Saturday afternoon that he had been informed of the shooting, and the FBI is currently present at the scene.

State Governor Dan McKee mentioned that the state police, along with the state emergency management agency, are collaborating with local law enforcement in response to the incident.

Brown University is a nonprofit research institution with approximately 7,300 undergraduate students and over 3,000 graduate students, as indicated on its official website.
