Houston, Jan 23 (NationPress) A student lost their life, and two others sustained injuries during a shooting incident at a high school in Nashville, the capital of the southern state of Tennessee, according to the Metro Nashville Police Department.
The assailant, a 17-year-old student armed with a handgun, began shooting in the cafeteria of Antioch High School at around 11 a.m. local time on Wednesday before taking his own life, as stated by police during a press briefing.
A female student was fatally shot. Among the injured, a female student experienced a graze wound to her arm and is currently in stable condition at a hospital, while a male student, who was not shot, received treatment for a facial injury, as per an ABC News report.
The school was placed on lockdown following the shooting, according to Xinhua news agency.
Students were transported to a reunification site outside the school for their distressed parents to retrieve them.
"Antioch High School is currently on lockdown due to gunfire within the school premises," the institution announced on social media.
The school district (@MetroSchools) issued a statement on X, indicating, "Antioch High School is on lockdown due to shots being fired inside the school building. Metro Police are present. The Metro Schools announced that students would be transported to Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital, 3754 Murfreesboro Pike, via buses once they are released by the Metro Police.
"We kindly ask that parents head to the reunification site at Ascension Saint Thomas. Please refrain from coming to Antioch High School. Thank you," they stated.
The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also responded to the scene, according to WSMV 4.
A SWAT team cleared the school, and an investigation is currently underway, authorities confirmed.
Approximately 2,000 students are enrolled in grades nine through twelve at the school, based on information from its website.
In March 2023, three nine-year-olds and three adults tragically lost their lives at The Covenant School, a private Christian elementary school in the city.
