China's Consumer Inflation Sees Significant Rise in February
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 10 (NationPress) The consumer price index (CPI) in China, a critical indicator of inflation, witnessed a rise of 1.3 percent year-on-year in February, attributed to the impacts of the Spring Festival holiday, as per official figures.
The core CPI, which omits food and energy prices, saw an increase of 1.8 percent year-on-year, according to data published by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
Additionally, the producer price index (PPI), which evaluates the costs for goods at the factory level, decreased by 0.9 percent year-on-year last month, with a consistent narrowing of the decline, as noted by the NBS, and reported by Xinhua news agency.
This narrowing trend was fueled by a rise in global commodity prices, swift demand growth in certain domestic sectors, and the sustained effectiveness of macroeconomic policies, explained NBS statistician Dong Lijuan.
In comparison to the same timeframe last year, the CPI's rise in February escalated to 1.3 percent, up from a mere 0.2-percent gain recorded in January, marking the highest increase in almost three years, as highlighted by Dong.
A detailed examination reveals that service prices surged by 1.6 percent in February, with this growth rate expanding by 1.5 percentage points from the prior month, contributing around 0.75 percentage points to the year-on-year CPI increase.
Within the service sector, airline ticket prices, transportation rentals, travel agency fees, and hotel accommodation saw respective increases of 29.1 percent, 19.8 percent, 12.5 percent, and 5.4 percent in February.
Prices for pet services, vehicle repairs, household services, and food deliveries rose by 13 percent, 12 percent, 6.3 percent, and 5.6 percent, respectively, last month.
Food prices, including fresh vegetables, beef, mutton, and fruits, increased by 5.9 percent to 10.9 percent in February, a more significant rise than observed in January. Collectively, these food price hikes contributed approximately 0.41 percentage points to the overall CPI increase year-on-year.
Month-on-month, the CPI rose by 1 percent in February compared to the 0.2-percent increase in January, the highest in nearly two years, as indicated by the data.
Prices of industrial consumer goods increased by 0.4 percent, an uptick of 0.1 percentage points from the previous month.
Year-on-year, China's PPI fell by 0.9 percent, with the rate of decline narrowing by 0.5 percentage points from January, marking three consecutive months of reduced decline.
