Thimphu, Oct 25 (NationPress) Chief Justice of India (CJI) B R Gavai met with King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck of Bhutan on Saturday to explore ways to enhance judicial cooperation between the two countries, reaffirming their commitment to fortifying India–Bhutan relations.
During his official visit to Bhutan, the CJI also engaged with Bhutan's Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay on Friday, where he reiterated the Indian judiciary’s willingness to assist the Bhutanese judiciary in areas such as technology integration, capacity building, and knowledge exchange.
“I had the privilege of meeting H.E. Mr. Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, Hon’ble Chief Justice of India, to discuss closer judicial collaboration and the role of technology and AI in our justice system, while also expressing gratitude for India’s support in Bhutan’s development,” the Prime Minister stated on X following their meeting.
Justice Gavai also engaged in a meaningful discussion with students and faculty at the JSW School of Law. This event was attended by Princess Sonam Dechen Wangchuck and Chief Justice of Bhutan, Justice Norbu Tshering. While addressing the students, the Chief Justice of India highlighted the importance of compassion, wisdom, and ethical responsibility in legal education.
To further solidify the enduring ties between India and Bhutan, the Chief Justice announced an initiative to offer two positions of Law Clerks at the Supreme Court of India annually to law graduates from Bhutan, aiming to bolster academic engagement and professional collaboration between the judiciaries of both nations.
CJI Gavai and Lyonpo Norbu Tshering also convened with other judges of the Supreme Court of Bhutan in Thimphu on Thursday.
“The two Chief Justices held discussions on enhancing India-Bhutan judicial cooperation and exchanges. The Hon’ble CJI also planted a tree in the premises of the Supreme Court of Bhutan,” the Indian Embassy in Thimphu posted on X.
