Electric Vehicles Lead Norway's Automotive Market in 2024

Oslo, Jan 2 (NationPress) In 2024, nine out of ten new passenger vehicles sold in Norway were electric, representing yet another significant step in the country's shift towards zero-emission transportation.

As per the data released by the Norwegian Road Federation (OFV) on Thursday, electric vehicles made up 88.9 percent of new car sales, a substantial rise from 82.4 percent in 2023.

Norway registered a total of 128,691 new passenger cars in 2024, reflecting a 1.4 percent increase from the previous year. Out of these, 114,400 were electric, bringing the country closer to its ambitious target of 100 percent zero-emission vehicle sales by 2025.

“While we have not yet met the 2025 goal, no other nation comes close to Norway's remarkable proportion of electric vehicles,” stated Oyvind Solberg Thorsen, Director of OFV, during a press conference.

“The significant rise in electric car sales highlights the success of the incentives provided, yet achieving the remaining 10 percent will necessitate sustaining and potentially enhancing these initiatives,” he further noted.

The 2024 automotive market was led by prominent brands, with Tesla holding an 18.9 percent market share, followed by Volkswagen, Toyota, Volvo, and BMW, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

Chinese electric vehicle brands have also made significant progress, with names like MG, BYD, Polestar, and XPeng experiencing notable growth and entering the top 15 best-selling brands.

Norway's commitment to zero-emission vehicles began in 2016, when the government established the ambitious goal of ceasing sales of fossil-fueled passenger cars by 2025. A series of incentives, including tax exemptions, reduced tolls, free parking, and subsidized charging, have been crucial in establishing Norway as a global frontrunner in electric vehicle adoption.

In September 2024, OFV announced that Norway became the first nation where electric cars outnumber fossil-fueled vehicles on the roads.
