New Delhi, Dec 24 (NationPress) Reuben Gauci, High Commissioner of Malta to India, who also oversees Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives, along with his role as ambassador to Nepal, has expressed his worries regarding the prevailing political climate in Bangladesh. He highlighted the potential consequences for both regional stability and the significant Bangladeshi diaspora residing in his nation.
“I am responsible for Bangladesh in addition to being the High Commissioner of Malta to India. My responsibilities extend to Sri Lanka, Maldives, and I also serve as the Ambassador to Nepal,” Gauci shared with IANS.
“I have been monitoring the situation closely due to the considerable Bangladeshi community in Malta. Naturally, we are concerned about developments in the country that is home to many expatriates in our nation,” he added.
The ambassador pointed out that the unrest in Bangladesh has deep-rooted origins. “We are observing current events, but the issues began long before the present situation, notably when the government led by Sheikh Hasina faced challenges. We are hopeful that the elections scheduled for February 3 will proceed without incident,” he remarked.
While Malta may not have extensive economic relations with Bangladesh, Gauci emphasized the importance of stability in the country due to the hardworking and respected Bangladeshi community in Malta. “The concern regarding Bangladesh is not exclusive to Malta; it resonates with neighboring India as well. Therefore, the concern should be recognized globally,” he stated.
Additionally, the ambassador underscored Malta’s focus on humanitarian matters in Bangladesh, specifically regarding the Rohingya population, and the collaboration with international organizations like the World Food Programme. “We frequently communicate with the EU ambassador in Dhaka, Mr. Michael Miller, an esteemed diplomat who keeps us updated on various developments,” he noted.
Reflecting on his tenure in India, Gauci commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his leadership and the nation’s economic advancements. “Since my arrival five years ago during Prime Minister Modi’s administration, I have been impressed by his governance. We regularly engage with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who is exceptional in his role. I believe Modi has successfully propelled the Indian economy, progressing from the sixth to the fifth and now the fourth position globally, with aspirations to reach the third,” Gauci stated.
