Washington, Sep 11 (NationPress) Sergio Gor, the nominee for the US Ambassador to India under President Donald Trump, has emphasized that India is a strategic ally "whose future trajectory will influence the region and beyond".
During his confirmation hearing before the Senate on Thursday, Gor committed to enhancing both defense and economic relationships with India.
"India's strategic location, robust economic growth, and military strength establish it as a key player in regional stability and a vital contributor to promoting prosperity and advancing our shared security interests. India is one of the most significant relationships our nation maintains globally. I aim to fulfill a presidential agenda that enhances US interests through bolstering defense cooperation, ensuring equitable trade, enhancing energy security, and advancing technology," he stated.
Gor also discussed the importance of fortifying defense connections with India.
“I will prioritize deepening defense and security collaboration with India. This includes broadening joint military exercises, promoting co-development and co-production of defense technologies, and finalizing essential defense transactions," he remarked.
He further pointed out India's demographic advantage, noting that the nation's population of 1.4 billion and its rapidly expanding middle class present "significant opportunities for America, from artificial intelligence to pharmaceuticals and critical minerals—the potential for partnership is enormous."
While introducing Gor, Secretary of State Marco Rubio referred to US-India relations as "one of the top partnerships the United States has globally" and mentioned it is currently experiencing an "extraordinary transition."
“In fact, it’s so essential that we have even renamed the command of the Indo-Pacific. India is at the heart of that," Rubio added.
On Wednesday, Indian Ambassador to the US Vinay Kwatra expressed his support for Gor’s nomination, stating that "President Trump is appointing one of his most trusted aides to represent the US in India."
“This decision is seen as a testament to the significance and priority of India-US relations, reinforcing commitments to strengthen bonds of friendship between our nations," Ambassador Kwatra shared on X.
On August 22, US President Donald Trump revealed the nomination of his close aide Sergio Gor as the forthcoming Ambassador to India.
“For the most populous region in the world, it is crucial that I have someone I can completely trust to fulfill my agenda and help us MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN. Sergio will be an exceptional Ambassador," Trump stated on Truth Social.
Additionally, Trump announced that Gor would also act as a special envoy for South and Central Asian affairs.
The 38-year-old Gor currently serves as the Director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office, responsible for vetting over 4,000 positions within the new Trump administration.
