Gaza, May 30 (NationPress) A high-ranking official from Hamas has stated that the US ceasefire proposal for the Gaza Strip is currently being evaluated, although it does not fulfill the essential demands of both the movement and the Palestinian populace.
In a statement made on Thursday, Basem Naim, a member of Hamas's political bureau, noted that the group has received the Israeli response to the US proposal that was facilitated last week by US Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
According to Naim, the Israeli stance does not adequately address critical Palestinian demands, such as a total halt to hostilities and the removal of the enduring blockade on Gaza.
He emphasized that the proposal would permit the persistence of “occupation” and humanitarian hardships, even amidst a temporary ceasefire.
“Nonetheless, the leadership of the movement is assessing the proposal with a sense of national duty, especially given the ongoing violence and humanitarian crisis confronting the Palestinian people,” Naim stated.
Earlier, Hamas mentioned that it had received the revised ceasefire proposal via mediators and is reviewing it to reflect the interests of the Palestinian people while striving for lasting peace and relief for Gaza's residents.
Previously, Hamas indicated that it had reached an agreement with Mr. Witkoff on a “general framework” for an agreement that would lead to a sustainable ceasefire, a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, an influx of humanitarian aid, and a transfer of authority from the militant group to a politically independent Palestinian committee.
