Washington, April 21 (NationPress) US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth revealed classified military strategies concerning airstrikes in Yemen through a private Signal group chat with family and trusted friends.
This incident, which is said to have taken place prior to the US executing airstrikes on Houthi rebel positions on March 15, amplifies concerns regarding the Trump official's management of sensitive national security data.
As reported by The New York Times, Hegseth disclosed highly confidential information, including F/A-18 Hornet flight schedules, in a private group called “Defense | Team Huddle,” which he established in January using his personal device. This group included his wife, Jennifer Hegseth (a former Fox News producer), his brother, his personal attorney, and around a dozen others from his personal circle.
The report by The Times follows an earlier revelation from The Atlantic, which uncovered another Signal chat originally designed for senior national security officials.
That group, initiated by National Security Adviser Mike Waltz, mistakenly included Atlantic editor Jeffrey Goldberg.
Both reports suggest that Hegseth disseminated the same sensitive information in both chats around the same timeframe.
The recent disclosures have heightened scrutiny over Hegseth's judgment and raised alarms regarding operational security at the highest echelons of the Pentagon.
Critics contend that by discussing top-secret military strategies over an unclassified messaging platform and involving non-government individuals, Hegseth potentially compromised operational safety and flouted established protocols.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer condemned Hegseth’s conduct, demanding his immediate termination. “We continue to learn how Pete Hegseth endangered lives,” Schumer posted on X. “But Trump remains too weak to dismiss him. Pete Hegseth must be fired.”
In spite of the escalating criticism, the Pentagon has yet to provide an official response, and the White House has not addressed media inquiries regarding the issue.
