Islamabad, Oct 15 (NationPress) The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has raised significant alarm regarding the recent violent confrontations between Pakistani security forces and the radical Islamist faction Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) in Muridke, Punjab province, which led to numerous fatalities and injuries among both demonstrators and law enforcement officials.

The rights organization noted that the unrest, which began on October 8, escalated into violence during an operation conducted in the early hours of October 13.

The situation intensified on Monday when four individuals, including both police officers and civilians, lost their lives, and 56 more were reported injured during the clashes associated with the TLP's long march.

Among the injured were 48 police and rangers personnel, with 17 suffering from gunshot wounds. Additionally, three TLP supporters and one bystander were killed, while eight other civilians were also hurt, as reported by The Express Tribune.

The HRCP has voiced concerns over the lack of transparency and the absence of credible, independent information regarding the operation, emphasizing that it is the responsibility of the Pakistani government to provide such information.

“While state authorities have overlooked the TLP’s ongoing role in promoting hate speech and inciting mob violence against various individuals and groups, especially religious minorities, this does not excuse the alleged use of excessive force,” stated the HRCP.

“Both the Constitution and international law dictate that security forces must use only the minimum necessary force, even when dispersing violent gatherings. The government is obligated to ensure that criminal activities are investigated promptly and that those responsible are prosecuted,” the HRCP added.

The HRCP insisted that it is time for the Pakistani government to pledge to foster an “inclusive and plural society,” which necessitates an “honest and transparent shift” in policy alongside much-needed structural reforms.

“Only through these actions can we hope to tackle the underlying issues of extremist religious violence,” the rights organization remarked.

The TLP, notorious for its radical ideology and actions, faced severe backlash on social media as users criticized the group for instigating violence on the streets despite ongoing peace negotiations between Israel and Palestine.
