Increased Snowfall Anticipated in the US Great Lakes Area: Meteorologists

New York, Dec 3 (NationPress) Various areas within the Great Lakes region of the United States have received fresh snowfall and are bracing for additional accumulation this week, as travelers faced challenging weather conditions to return home post-Thanksgiving, according to weather experts.

Snow showers impacted western Michigan overnight, with forecasts predicting heavier and more consistent snow accumulations of up to a foot (30 centimeters) set to arrive on Monday, as reported by the US National Weather Service.

Further snow is anticipated on Wednesday and Thursday, coupled with strong winds and freezing temperatures, as reported by Xinhua news agency, citing The Associated Press.

Over the weekend, nearly 4 feet (1.2 meters) of lake-effect snow—resulting from warm, moist air sweeping across the Great Lakes—was recorded in upstate New York and sections of Pennsylvania and Michigan.

A surge of Arctic air last week brought extremely low temperatures ranging from 10 to 20 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 12 to minus 6 degrees Celsius) below average to the northern Plains, according to the weather service. This chilly air mass was projected to drift over the eastern third of the United States by Monday.

Specifically, Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro declared a disaster emergency on Saturday, noting that parts of Erie County in the northwest received close to 2 feet (61 centimeters) of snow, leading to the closure of City Hall to the public on Monday and Tuesday.

In New York, Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency on Friday for nearly a dozen counties in the state due to several feet of lake-effect snow expected to accumulate through Monday evening.
