Throughout the past decade, India has addressed the urgent demands for relief and economic revival in Iraq, both directly and as part of international initiatives under UN guidance.

In addition, India inaugurated its Consulate in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan region, in August 2016 to enhance economic and trade ties with Iraq.

Numerous Indian enterprises have actively participated in trade fairs and economic exhibitions held in Erbil and Sulaymaniyah over recent years.

The influx of Indian workers in the Kurdish regions of Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, and Dohuk has steadily grown, benefiting from improved salaries and working conditions in sectors such as steel manufacturing, oil extraction, and construction.

Nechirvan Barzani, the President of the Kurdistan region, has expressed his desire to deepen relations with India and has praised the Indian workforce in the region, noting their reputation as a “dedicated and professional working community”.

During the Munich Security Conference in February 2022, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with the regional President and assured him of India’s intentions to enhance capacity building in the Kurdistan region through training initiatives in health, banking, and education.

“Discussions also encompassed the religious and ethnic diversity, as well as the rich culture of peaceful coexistence and tolerance in India, alongside medical trips from Kurdistan to India and other pertinent topics,” stated a release from the President's office following the meeting.
