Riga, Nov 6 (NationPress) India and Latvia conducted their 9th Foreign Office Consultations in Riga, reaching a consensus to enhance their partnership in various sectors including trade, technology, innovation, and people-to-people connections.
During the discussions held on Wednesday, officials from both nations evaluated the full spectrum of their bilateral relations. The Indian delegation was headed by Sibi George, Secretary (West), Ministry of External Affairs, while the Latvian team was led by Andzejs Vilumsons, State Secretary of Latvia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as stated by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday.
The MEA noted: "Secretary (West) expressed India’s gratitude for Latvia’s strong condemnation of all forms of terrorism and reaffirmed India’s support for Latvia’s successful tenure at the UNSC for 2026-2027. Both parties exchanged insights on regional and global matters of mutual interest."
The two nations agreed to sustain regular official interactions and plan the next Foreign Office Consultations in New Delhi at a mutually agreeable time in 2026. The previous consultations took place in New Delhi in November 2022.
George also paid a visit to Latvia's Foreign Minister Baiba Braze and engaged with members of the Indian diaspora in Latvia.
The Indian Embassy in Riga shared on X: "Secretary (West) Sibi George met with members of the Indian diaspora in Latvia, highlighting their significant role in fortifying India-Latvia relations."
Additionally, the MEA Secretary announced the launch of consular services for the newly-established Indian Resident Mission in Riga.
The mission posted on X: "Secretary (West) Sibi George inaugurated consular services at the newly established Indian Resident Mission in Riga and engaged with the Embassy team."
During his visit, George toured the National Library of Latvia and paid tribute by laying flowers at the bust of Mahatma Gandhi, where he was welcomed by the Deputy Director of the Library.
India and Latvia share a warm and friendly relationship. India recognized Latvia as a sovereign state in 1991, as per the Indian Embassy in Riga, and diplomatic ties were formed in 1992. The two countries celebrated 30 years of diplomatic relations in 2022. Latvia opened its Embassy in New Delhi in 2014, while India inaugurated its Embassy in Riga in July 2024.
Earlier this year in March, Latvian Foreign Minister Braze visited India to participate in the 10th edition of the Raisina Dialogue, where she met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to discuss bilateral cooperation.
