India and Norway on Monday, 15 June held high-level discussions on evolving global priorities and ways to deepen their multifaceted bilateral partnership. The meeting, held in New Delhi, brought together Norway's Ambassador to India May-Elin Stener and Aparna Ray, Joint Secretary for Policy Planning and Research at India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

Last month, Prime Minister Narendra Modi undertook a two-day official visit to Norway, participating in the India-Nordic Summit and holding bilateral engagements in Oslo. A landmark outcome of that visit was the upgrading of bilateral ties to a Green Strategic Partnership — a framework designed to deepen collaboration in clean energy, sustainable growth, the blue economy, and green shipping.

Modi held talks with his Norwegian counterpart, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, where the two leaders also discussed strengthening linkages in innovation, research, education, healthcare, and skill development. Notably, Norway joined the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative during the visit — a significant strategic signal given Oslo's maritime expertise.

Business, Research, and Investment Outreach

Modi and Store jointly participated in the Business and Research Summit at Oslo City Hall, where Modi outlined India's reform trajectory and extended an invitation to Norwegian businesses to invest in India's clean energy sector. He also highlighted collaboration potential in food security, fertilisers, fisheries, and shipbuilding — areas where Norway's industrial depth aligns with India's growth priorities.

Royal Honour for PM Modi

During the Oslo visit, King Harald V conferred upon Modi the Grand Cross of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit — Norway's highest state honour. This marked the 32nd international honour bestowed upon the Prime Minister, reflecting the personal diplomatic capital India has accumulated in Nordic capitals.

Monday's MEA-level meeting signals that both governments intend to operationalise the commitments made during the Modi-Store summit.
