Indonesia Plans to Import 2 Million Live Cattle by 2029

Jakarta, Dec 5 (NationPress) Indonesia is set to import 2 million live cattle by 2029, targeting about 400,000 annually, to enhance the nation's meat and milk production, as stated by the Ministry of Agriculture on Thursday.

Agung Suganda, the director general of livestock and animal health at the Ministry of Agriculture, mentioned that there are over 200 investor entities involved in the livestock industry. Most local investors prefer partnership models, while foreign investors usually establish their own farms.

He highlighted that 134 investors are focusing on dairy cattle farming, whereas approximately 70 investors are dedicated to beef cattle farming.

It is reported that around 90 percent of farms in Indonesia are small-scale operations, lacking integration with the processing industry, as per Xinhua news agency.

Investments in dairy cattle farming are projected to be realized by 2025, with at least 1.5 million hectares of land available nationwide.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture Sudaryono mentioned that the local fresh milk supply aims to fulfill over 50 percent of national demand by 2025, with support from 60 investors, both local and international.
