Indonesian Authorities Arrest Four Individuals on Terrorism Charges

Jakarta, Dec 28 (NationPress) The Indonesian authorities have taken into custody four individuals during a significant operation in West Java as part of an ongoing inquiry into suspected terrorist activities, local media sources disclosed on Saturday.

This operation, led by the National Police's counterterrorism division, was executed in the Majalengka area of the province. Law enforcement reportedly confiscated several items, including important documents and firecrackers.

In the past, Indonesia has faced numerous terrorist attacks, such as the catastrophic Bali bombings in 2002 and the Makassar cathedral bombing in 2021. In reaction, the Southeast Asian country has engaged in counterterrorism actions both within its borders and internationally, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.

Previously, on September 4, the national police's counterterrorism squad, known as Densus 88, detained two suspects for alleged terrorism activities in the province of West Java, according to statements from the unit's spokesperson, Aswin Siregar.

He indicated that these arrests occurred in the Bekasi area, where various pieces of evidence were collected, and the suspects are currently undergoing extensive interrogation.

On October 20, 2023, the counterterrorism unit arrested nine individuals across three separate operations on suspicions of terrorism, police officials stated.

Ahmad Ramadhan, spokesperson for the National Police, informed reporters that five suspects were arrested in South Sumatra, who were believed to have connections with the homegrown extremist organization Jamaah Islamiyah (JI), which has ties to the Islamic State (IS) terror faction.

Additionally, officers apprehended one suspect in West Kalimantan and four more in West Nusa Tenggara, who were associated with the extremist group Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), also connected to IS.

The JAD has been implicated in a series of attacks throughout the archipelago, including a suicide bombing at a cathedral in Makassar City on Sulawesi Island in March of the previous year and multiple suicide bombings at churches in East Java in 2018, resulting in the deaths of a dozen individuals. The group was designated an illegal organization in 2018.

The JI was responsible for the infamous 2002 Bali bombings, which claimed the lives of over 200 people on the popular holiday island.

According to the spokesperson, all suspects are currently undergoing further investigation by law enforcement authorities.
