Key Takeaways
Tehran, March 1 (NationPress) In the aftermath of the tragic killing of long-serving Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei due to a US-Israeli airstrike, Iran has appointed Ayatollah Alireza Arafi as the interim Supreme Leader. Khamenei, who had held the position since 1989 following the death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, was reported dead after an attack on his residence in Tehran.
Following the announcement of his demise, the Iranian government revealed the formation of a three-member council to manage the nation's leadership during this critical transition period. This council consists of President Masoud Pezeshkian, Judiciary Chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, and a legal expert from the Guardian Council, as reported by the IRNA news agency.
According to the constitutional framework of Iran, this council is to take on leadership responsibilities until a new Supreme Leader is appointed by the Assembly of Experts, an authoritative body comprised of 88 clerics who oversee various state functions, including the armed forces.
RT reports that Ayatollah Arafi, a prominent Shia cleric and legal authority, was born in 1959 in Meybod, located in central Iran. He has been the head of Iran’s Centre for the Management of Islamic Seminaries and has directed the esteemed Qom Seminary since 2016. Additionally, he is a member of the influential Guardian Council, which plays a critical role in legislative vetting and election oversight.
His credentials also include serving as the President of Al-Mustafa International University from 2008 to 2018 and being a permanent member of the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution since 2011.
