Key Takeaways
United Nations, March 7 (NationPress) A devastating report from Iran's UN ambassador, Amir Saeid Iravani, reveals that at least 1,332 Iranian civilians, including women and children, have lost their lives due to US-Israeli airstrikes, with thousands more sustaining injuries. Iravani noted that over 180 children have died, and more than 20 schools have been affected, citing information from the Iranian Red Crescent Society, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
The ambassador accused the United States and Israel of intentionally targeting civilians and vital civilian infrastructure throughout Iran, indicating a blatant disregard for human life and the principles of warfare. He stated, 'They recognize no red line in committing these heinous acts.'
Irani emphasized that Iranian cities are under indiscriminate attack, with densely populated areas and essential civilian facilities being specifically targeted. 'These actions amount to clear war crimes and crimes against humanity,' he asserted.
To date, 13 healthcare facilities have been struck, and various civilian sports and recreational sites in Tehran and other locales were hit last Thursday, resulting in the deaths of over 18 female athletes and injuring about 100 others, according to Iravani.
He condemned the aggressors' claims of only targeting military objectives as groundless, stating, 'Their true intention is clear: to instill fear in civilians, slaughter innocent lives, and maximize destruction and suffering.'
In response to the ongoing aggression, Iravani underscored that Iran will invoke its inherent right to self-defense as outlined in Article 51 of the UN Charter. He affirmed that Iran's response is 'lawful, necessary, and proportionate,' aimed solely at the military targets of the aggressors.
The ambassador insisted that while Iran does not seek war, it will steadfastly protect its sovereignty and take all necessary actions to defend its people, territory, and independence.
Regarding comments made by US President Donald Trump about the election of a new supreme leader in Iran, Iravani labeled them as a 'clear violation' of the UN Charter's principles on non-interference in state affairs, asserting that Iran 'does not accept and will never allow foreign interference.'
He called upon all UN member states to denounce this aggression and the associated war crimes, urging the Security Council to take immediate and decisive action to address this serious threat to regional and global peace and security.
