Iranians Erupt in Celebration Following Khamenei's Death Amid US-Israel Strikes
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Tehran, March 1 (NationPress) A large number of Iranians took to the streets of Tehran and other cities across the nation overnight, celebrating the announcement of the death of the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, amid a series of coordinated strikes by the US and Israel.
Khamenei's demise came during a historic assault by the US and Israel, signaling a pivotal moment in the 46-year rule of the Shia theocracy, as Tehran's counteractions ignited turmoil throughout much of the Middle East.
Many Iranians, both domestically and internationally, marked this occasion with celebrations, although concerns over potential retaliatory actions from American and Israeli forces cast a shadow over the festivities.
Insiders in Tehran, utilizing Starlink satellite internet, reported to Iran International that residents were enthusiastically leaning out of their windows and gathering on rooftops shortly after the news broke, expressing their joy aloud.
Despite considerable internet disruptions, videos surfaced online showing individuals dancing and celebrating in cities such as Karaj, Qazvin, Shiraz, Kermanshah, Isfahan, and Sanandaj.
In response, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has pledged to retaliate against Khamenei's “murderers” and has vowed that their response will be the “most ferocious offensive operation in history” directed at the US and Israel.
In a statement on its official Telegram channel, the IRGC declared, “The Iranian nation’s hand of vengeance for a severe, decisive, and regrettable punishment for the murderers of the Imam of the Ummah will not release them.”
The IRGC, along with the Armed Forces and Basij forces, promised to “vigorously continue the path of their leader in safeguarding his legacy, standing firm against both internal and external threats, and delivering what they termed a lesson-giving punishment to aggressors against the Islamic homeland.”
The Iranian Cabinet has also cautioned that this “great crime will never go unpunished.”
US President Donald Trump confirmed on Saturday the killing of the 86-year-old cleric, effectively ending his autocratic rule over Iran that lasted 36 years.
Trump remarked on Truth Social, “He could not evade our Intelligence and Highly Sophisticated Tracking Systems, and in collaboration with Israel, there was nothing he, or the other leaders killed alongside him, could do.”
As the US-Israel operation commenced, Tehran retaliated with a barrage of drones and missiles targeting Israel, Qatar, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Jordan, and Kuwait.
Trump authorized the attack shortly after midnight in Washington—daytime in Iran—just two days following inconclusive negotiations in Geneva mediated by Oman.
Iran was shaken last month by public protests fueled by inflation that challenged the regime but were brutally suppressed by the government, reportedly resulting in thousands of deaths.
