Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Jerusalem, March 17 (NationPress) On Tuesday, Israel asserted that it has eliminated Ali Larijani, the Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.
According to a statement posted on X by the Israel Defence Forces (IDF), Larijani was regarded as a prominent figure within the Iranian regime and a close ally of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
"Ali Larijani, the effective leader of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, has been taken out. For many years, he was viewed as one of the most experienced and senior leaders in the Iranian government, closely connected to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei," the IDF announced on X.
"During the recent protests against the Iranian regime, Larijani was directly responsible for overseeing the violent crackdown on Iranian demonstrators," they added.
Shortly after Israel’s announcement, social media accounts associated with Larijani shared a handwritten note where he referenced the funeral ceremony for 84 Iranian sailors who perished in the March 4 U.S. attack on the warship IRIS Dena near the coast of Sri Lanka.
"Their legacy will always be cherished by the Iranian people," the note attributed to Larijani stated.
Following Khamenei's passing, Larijani reportedly took command of the Iranian regime, spearheading efforts against Israel and regional adversaries, according to the IDF's statement.
This news about Ali Larijani's death comes just days after he attended the International Quds Day rally in Tehran on March 13.
Earlier that day, the IDF also reported the death of Gholamreza Soleimani, the commander of the Basij Unit.
In another post on X, the IDF declared, "COMMANDER OF THE BASIJ UNIT ELIMINATED. Yesterday, we targeted and neutralized Gholamreza Soleimani, who led the Basij unit for the past six years. Under his command, the Basij unit was responsible for severe repression operations in Iran, employing harsh violence, mass arrests, and brutal force against peaceful protestors."
Previously, the IDF confirmed that they targeted command centers, UAVs, ballistic missile sites, and air defense facilities in Tehran.
"Iranian regime infrastructure across various locations in Iran was hit: In Tehran, numerous munitions were dropped on command centers and UAV, ballistic missile, and air defense sites were targeted," the IDF stated on X.
"In Shiraz, the command center of internal security forces and a ballistic missile site were struck. Additional Iranian air defense systems in Tabriz were dismantled, enhancing aerial dominance in the region and safeguarding Israel," they concluded.
