Israeli Airstrike Targets Lebanon Amid Ceasefire Violations: Report

Beirut, Dec 26 (NationPress) An Israeli airstrike targeted a residence in the eastern Lebanese region of Baalbek, despite a ceasefire deal between Lebanon and Israel, as reported by Lebanese official and military sources.

The National News Agency reported that the early morning strike impacted a house in the Taraya village plain, located near the Litani River to the west of Baalbek on Wednesday, resulting in no injuries. It accused Israeli warplanes of “violating the ceasefire agreement.”

A Lebanese military source informed Xinhua that Israeli artillery also targeted the village of Maroun al-Ras in the southern border region at noon. The source added that “Israeli elements raised the Israeli flag on the Awaida hill on the southern outskirts of the Marjeyoun district.”

A ceasefire intended to conclude nearly 14 months of conflict between Israel and Hezbollah came into effect on November 27. The arrangement included an Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory within 60 days, with the Lebanese army set to deploy on the border and in the south to manage security and prohibit weapons and militants, according to Xinhua news agency.

Previously, the Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants lodged a complaint through the country’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York with the UN Security Council (UNSC) regarding Israel’s ongoing violations of the ceasefire agreement with Lebanon.

The Lebanese ministry stated on the social media platform X that between November 27 and December 22, Israel executed over 816 land and air assaults against Lebanon, targeting border villages, booby-trapping homes, demolishing residential areas, and obstructing roads.

Such violations complicate Lebanon's efforts to adhere to the stipulations of UN Resolution 1701, obstruct the Lebanese army's deployment in the south, and pose a significant threat to international endeavors aimed at fostering regional security and stability, the complaint detailed.

Despite the ceasefire, Israel has carried out sporadic strikes in Lebanon, some of which have resulted in casualties. Israel insists that the strikes are aimed at Hezbollah militants it accuses of breaching the agreement.
