New Delhi, March 2 (NationPress) External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar engaged with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Monday, prior to the leader's scheduled bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
After their dialogue, EAM Jaishankar expressed, "It was a pleasure to meet Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada in New Delhi today. I value his dedication to establishing a progressive partnership."
Carney, along with his spouse Diana Fox Carney, arrived in Mumbai on February 27 for his inaugural official trip to India, which spans until March 2.
Upon reaching New Delhi on Monday, he took to X to share, "I have arrived in New Delhi to meet with Prime Minister Modi. Canada and India are both ambitious nations eager to collaborate boldly. We are creating new alliances in energy, talent, innovation, and AI to enhance the security and prosperity of our populations."
Later today, he will engage in delegation-level discussions with Prime Minister Modi at the Hyderabad House.
"The two leaders will assess the advancements made thus far in various domains of the India-Canada Strategic Partnership, building on their previous meetings in Kananaskis (June 2025) and Johannesburg (November 2025). They will review ongoing collaboration in essential areas including trade, energy, critical minerals, agriculture, education, research, innovation, and cultural exchanges," stated the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
The leaders will also discuss regional and global matters while attending the India-Canada CEOs Forum in New Delhi.
This visit marks a pivotal point in the normalization of India-Canada relations. The two Prime Ministers have previously agreed to pursue a constructive and balanced partnership based on mutual respect for each other's concerns, robust people-to-people connections, and expanding economic synergies. The upcoming meeting offers a chance to reaffirm the shared vision and positive momentum between India and Canada.
During his time in Mumbai, Carney participated in various business activities, meeting with Indian and Canadian business leaders, industry experts, innovators, educators, and representatives of Canadian Pension Funds operating in India.
Earlier, upon arriving in Mumbai, Carney referred to India as "the world's fastest-growing major economy," expressing his intent to build partnerships that will create new avenues for Canadian professionals and enterprises.
Sharing a video of his Mumbai arrival on X, Carney remarked, "India is the world's fastest-growing major economy. We’ve just arrived in Mumbai to engage with business leaders and establish partnerships that will unveil new opportunities for Canadian workers and businesses."
Prime Minister Modi last interacted with Carney during the G20 Summit in Johannesburg in November 2025, where he highlighted India's target of reaching $50 billion in bilateral trade by 2030.
