Brussels, March 16 (NationPress) External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar engaged in discussions with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Belgium on Monday, focusing on the latest developments in West Asia and Ukraine.
EAM Jaishankar conveyed his appreciation for Leyen's perspectives on significant global issues.
"It was a pleasure to meet with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen this afternoon. Her successful State Visit to India this past January represents a pivotal moment in our bilateral relations. We are actively following up on it. I value her views on contemporary global matters," EAM Jaishankar shared on X after the meeting.
Ursula von der Leyen emphasized that both India and the European Union (EU) are dedicated to the effective execution of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and the Security and Defence Partnership to benefit both sides at the earliest opportunity.
In a post on X, Ursula von der Leyen remarked, "I had a productive meeting with S Jaishankar today. At the EU-India Summit in January, we finalized our Free Trade Agreement—referred to as the mother of all deals—and established a Security and Defence Partnership."
"Our current focus is on the effective implementation, to ensure benefits for the citizens of Europe and India as soon as possible. We also addressed the situations in the Middle East and Ukraine. Our shared goals are de-escalation, stability, and energy security," she added.
EAM Jaishankar is undertaking a two-day visit to Belgium at the invitation of the European Union (EU) High Representative and Vice President Kaja Kallas, to engage with Foreign Ministers from the 27 EU Member States during the Foreign Affairs Council Meeting.
A statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) noted: "During this visit, EAM will engage with the leadership of the European Union and his counterparts from Belgium and other EU Member States. This visit follows the historic 16th India-EU Summit and aims to further enhance India’s Strategic Partnership with the European Union."
On January 27, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the signing of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the European Union, highlighting that this landmark partnership between two significant economies will generate new opportunities for businesses, consumers, and the skilled workforce.
