Karachi's Major Thoroughfares Remain Closed for Third Day Due to Security Concerns
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Islamabad, March 4 (NationPress) Multiple significant thoroughfares in Karachi, Pakistan, have remained closed for the third straight day due to escalating security concerns following protests triggered by the death of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as reported by local media.
During the protests outside the US Consulate, tragically, 11 demonstrators lost their lives and many others sustained injuries.
To manage the situation, barricades have been established at the railway crossing on Mai Kolachi Road, and a substantial number of traffic police are present in the area, according to Pakistan's Geo News. Citizens and workers are permitted to pass from Boat Basin to Mai Kolachi, provided they present their national identity cards.
To obstruct traffic towards Jinnah Bridge and Mai Kolachi, shipping containers have been strategically placed on the PIDC Bridge. Additional barriers have been erected to control traffic from MT Khan Road to PIDC Road and Mai Kolachi, with law enforcement officers and Rangers stationed at various points.
Moreover, routes from Jinnah Bridge toward Mai Kolachi and PIDC Road have been closed off. Residents in the vicinity of Bilawal House and Boat Basin are advised to take alternative paths via Clifton Bridge before heading towards Metropole and II Chundrigar Road.
Traffic and local police officials are positioned throughout Karachi to assist commuters with route diversions. Authorities have indicated that personnel are deployed across the city, and citizens can reach out to the traffic police helpline for the latest updates on road conditions, as reported by Geo News.
In light of the ongoing security challenges, the US Embassy in Islamabad along with its consulates in Lahore and Karachi have temporarily halted operations.
In a message shared on X on Tuesday, the US Embassy in Islamabad announced, “Due to the current security situation, the US Embassy in Islamabad and the Consulates General in Lahore and Karachi have canceled all visa appointments through Friday, March 6.”
