Members of the Kashmiri diaspora staged a demonstration outside the Pakistani Consulate in Bradford, United Kingdom, on 6 August, condemning what they described as a brutal crackdown by Pakistani security forces against peaceful protesters in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The protest drew participants across age groups, including elderly residents, women, and children, reflecting the breadth of community concern over the escalating unrest.

What Protesters Demanded

Demonstrators expressed solidarity with the civil society coalition Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), a group at the forefront of civilian resistance in PoK. Placards carried by the crowd bore messages including 'Pakistan Stop Brutalities', 'Pakistan Stop Killing Kashmiris in Rawalakot', and 'We Stand with Awami Action Committee'. Slogans were raised demanding an end to military operations in the region.

The Bradford protest is part of a wider wave of demonstrations by Kashmiri diaspora groups outside Pakistani diplomatic missions globally, with protesters calling for international intervention over the alleged crackdown.

Scale of the Unrest in PoK

According to reports, the escalating unrest in PoK has claimed more than 50 lives and left hundreds injured over the last few days. Activists and diaspora groups have cautioned that the actual death toll is likely significantly higher, citing a reported communications blackout in the territory that is hampering independent verification.

This is not the first time PoK has witnessed civilian unrest, but the scale and reported lethality of the current crackdown have drawn unusual international attention.

British MPs Raise Alarm

Last week, several British parliamentarians voiced grave concern over reports of live fire being used against civilians. Labour Party MP Liam Byrne called the reports 'deeply alarming' and said the All Party Parliamentary Group on Kashmir — a cross-party body in the UK Parliament — has made two formal demands.

'One, urgent talks with the High Commission of Pakistan here in London to say this has got to stop. But second, we're demanding to see our Foreign Office ministers too, to ensure that they are making representations at the highest level to the government of Pakistan. Ultimately, what is needed here is to honour the long-term commitments made in UN resolutions all those years ago. But in the here and now, we need the violence to stop,' Byrne stated.

'We need immediate de-escalation. We need calm heads. And crucially, we need the human rights of Kashmiris to be observed now,' he added.

Fellow British MP Adnan Hussain called the killing of civilians in PoK a 'tragedy', and said any use of excessive or unlawful force by Pakistani authorities must be subject to 'a full, independent and transparent investigation'. 'I urge all parties to exercise restraint, protect civilian life and engage in peaceful dialogue,' Hussain said.

Wider International Pressure

The Bradford demonstration underscores mounting pressure on Pakistani authorities from Kashmiri communities abroad. With British MPs now demanding Foreign Office intervention and diaspora protests spreading across multiple cities, the situation in PoK is drawing the kind of international scrutiny that Islamabad has historically sought to avoid. Whether the UK government formally raises the issue with Pakistan remains to be seen.
