Islamabad, April 19 (NationPress) The Islamic Republic of Pakistan declared on Saturday that any attacks directed at Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) and McDonald's nationwide will be classified as terrorist acts.
“Such actions will be regarded as equivalent to a terrorist attack. These franchises invest over $100 million in Pakistan, employ more than 25,000 individuals, fulfill their tax obligations entirely, and source from local suppliers. All profits remain in Pakistan. What justification exists for these assaults? These franchises are locally owned and operated. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has mandated immediate coordination among provinces to safeguard businesses and apprehend offenders,” stated Pakistan Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry during a press briefing.
Chaudhry also reported that more than 145 arrests were made in Punjab and 15 in Islamabad, alongside 12 FIRs that have been lodged.
“The individuals arrested expressed regret and sought forgiveness,” the minister noted.
Furthermore, he mentioned that all assaults were perpetrated by individuals, with no political organization implicated in the orchestrated violence.
“Religious leaders across the country have issued a decree categorizing these actions as un-Islamic. Targeting fast-food franchises under the guise of Islam is unacceptable. Young people must not be misled by extremist influences,” he urged.
Chaudhry added that enhanced security measures will be put in place at the restaurants, and stringent actions will be taken against anyone attempting to harm them.
Pakistan has experienced violent mob assaults on KFC and McDonald's in Sindh and Punjab provinces, particularly in major cities such as Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Sheikhupura following the recent events in Palestine.
Reports indicate at least 20 separate incidents in these provinces, where furious mobs attacked fast-food establishments, including KFC and McDonald's.
The outlets were also vandalized, and a worker was tragically shot dead during a mob assault in Sheikhupura, Punjab, on April 14.
