Key Takeaways
Islamabad, Feb 24 (NationPress) In a tragic incident, seven lives were claimed, among them six police officers, after unidentified gunmen assaulted a police vehicle in the Kohat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, on Tuesday, as reported by local media.
A high-ranking police official revealed that the deceased included the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), an inspector, and four constables. The vehicle was transporting two individuals to a court appearance when it came under fire, leading to one of them also being fatally shot. Post-attack, the assailants set the vehicle ablaze.
Earlier, on Monday, three members of the Federal Constabulary (FC) lost their lives when an ambulance, which was transporting injured personnel, was ambushed in the Badrakhail area of Karak, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as per reports cited by regional police.
The injured had been affected by a quadcopter strike on an FC post in the Dargah Shaheedan area and were en route to a hospital when they were targeted again, according to the District Police Officer (DPO), as reported by Geo News.
In this quadcopter assault, five FC personnel sustained injuries, and two rescue workers were also hurt during the ambulance assault. Following the attacks, police initiated a search and rescue operation to locate the attackers.
On February 16, a devastating suicide car bombing at a joint checkpost in Bajaur district, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, resulted in the deaths of approximately 11 Pakistani security personnel, as confirmed by local media citing statements from the military's media wing.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) issued a statement indicating that the explosion occurred at a security post near the Afghanistan border. Reports from Afghanistan's Khaama Press detailed that the checkpoint, which was situated in a former religious school, was completely destroyed, with bodies being recovered from the debris.
Additionally, a child residing nearby lost his life, while at least three others suffered serious injuries due to the blast damaging adjacent homes. Videos surfaced online showing civilians engaging in rescue efforts as they pulled survivors from the rubble, amidst concerns of rising civilian casualties.
This recent surge in violence follows a notable increase in suicide and militant attacks in Pakistan, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, since the collapse of a ceasefire agreement between the government and the Tehreek-e-Taliban (TTP) in 2022.
