The incident occurred when a suicide bomber detonated explosives near the checkpost by the bridge connecting Dera Ismail Khan to Punjab on Tuesday around 7 p.m. (local time), as reported by Pakistan's prominent daily, Dawn.
CCTV footage captured the attacker approaching the checkpost prior to the explosion.
As a result of the blast, two police officers lost their lives, and four others sustained injuries. All injured personnel were promptly taken to the District Headquarters Hospital for medical attention.
In the aftermath of the explosion, security measures were significantly heightened in both Dera Ismail Khan and Bhakkar district. Authorities closed the roadway near the Dera Darya Khan bridge and suspended all traffic as a safety precaution while a search operation was initiated in surrounding areas, as reported by Dawn. Commuters have been facing challenges due to the highway's closure between Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Earlier on Tuesday, seven individuals, including six police officers, were killed when unidentified assailants targeted a police vehicle in Kohat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, local media reported.
A senior police official stated that six police personnel, which included the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), one inspector, and four constables, were killed when their vehicle, transporting two individuals for a court appearance, was ambushed. The officer noted that one of the two individuals was also killed in the incident. Following the attack, the assailants set the vehicle ablaze.
On Monday, at least three members of the Federal Constabulary (FC) were killed when an ambulance carrying injured personnel was attacked in the Badrakhail area of Karak in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, according to local media citing regional police sources.
The personnel had been injured in a quadcopter assault on an FC post in the Dargah Shaheedan area on Monday and were being transported to a hospital for treatment when the attack occurred, as informed by the District Police Officer (DPO) to Pakistan's leading news outlet, Geo News.
The report indicated that at least five FC members were injured in the quadcopter strike, and two rescue personnel were also wounded in the ambulance attack. Following the incident, police initiated a search and rescue operation to locate the assailants.
