Lebanese Government Greenlights Military Deployment South of the Litani River

Beirut, Dec 7 (NationPress) Lebanese Information Minister Ziad Makary announced on Saturday that the Cabinet has sanctioned the deployment of the Lebanese army in the region south of the Litani River.

He stated, “The Lebanese army has commenced mobilizing its forces to the south and requires substantial equipment, personnel, and resources,” adding that support is being provided to the military.

“The rubble and debris of destroyed structures will be cleared, and the southern areas will be decontaminated of cluster bombs,” the minister disclosed, indicating that the Cabinet has also “approved a draft law to reconstruct homes that were devastated by the conflict.”

As per Makary, Lebanon has stationed its army along the northern and eastern borders adjacent to Syria and “is implementing necessary measures in light of the developments there.”

Makary made these remarks following a special Cabinet session held in the southern Lebanese city of Tyre, during which Prime Minister Najib Mikati reiterated his appeal to the international community to halt Israel’s persistent violations of the ceasefire agreement and to withdraw from occupied regions.

The ceasefire, facilitated by the United States and France, came into effect on November 27, aiming to terminate nearly 14 months of conflict between Israel and the Lebanese armed faction Hezbollah.

According to the accord, both parties agreed to a 60-day cessation of hostilities, with Israel gradually pulling back its forces from southern Lebanon while Hezbollah retreats north of the Litani River.
